Writing Assignment #2:

Have you ever walked down the cereal aisle at the grocery store and noticed that the "kids" (read sugary) cereals are on the lower shelves? Is this really true or does it just seem this way. In this problem we will find out.

Connect to the following web site:

http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/Datafiles/Cereals.html

At this site is data from 77 different cereals (scroll down to see the cereal data) There is lots of data here but you are interested in only 2 pieces of data for each cereal - the grams of sugar per serving and the shelf position. The grams of sugar are listed in the column called sugar and the shelf position is listed in shelf and should be either a 1 2 or 3. Be careful when reading the data most browsers do not line this up perfectly. Once you have this data I want you to use the pictures of data tools in this chapter (boxplots, histograms, scatterdiagrams) to investigate the relationship between grams of sugar per serving and shelf position. You do not have to choose multiple tools - one tool will work (in other words don't feel you need to do both histogramsn and boxplots for example. You should however have different plots for each shelf (for example a histogram of grams of sugar per serving for each shelf would be appropriate). When you have completed you pictures please explain why you feel the tool you chose was the best choice and explain what you can conclude from your pictures about the relationship between grams of sugar per serving and shelf position

If you are confused about these directions please ask
