INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS

TI-83 INSTRUCTION PAGE

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS ON THE TI-83

The TI-83 Calculator keyboard is configured as shown below:

To do descriptive statistics you must do the following:

Set up the stats editor

Enter the data and name it if you wish

Calculate the statistics. The TI-83 will give you mean, sum of data, sum of square of data, the sample standard deviation, the population standard deviation, number of data points, the minimum value, the maximum value, the median, Q1 and Q3. You can also get a set of two variable stats which we will not really look at until chapter 9

Instructions for each of these operations are given below:

SETTING UP THE STATS EDITOR

Usually when you are starting with a new set of data, you should clear the existing data out of the list. By default you are given 6 different lists in which you can enter data: L1,L2,L3,L4,L5 and L6. You can get more lists by naming your lists (instructions below). There are two ways to clear a set of data from a list:

Hit STAT button, then hit 4 for ClrList, then enter the names of the lists you wish to clear. For example, if you wish to clear L1 and L2, enter these keystrokes: STAT 4 2nd 1 , 2nd 2 ENTER. Here is what these keystrokes look like on the screen

Hit STAT

Hit 4

Hit 2nd 1

Hit ,

Hit 2nd 2

Hit ENTER

As an alternative, if data is already in a list (suppose L1), Hit STAT, then hit 1 for edit. You will see the statistics editor on the screen, the cursor should be in the first column of L1, hit the up arrow key (This is close to the del key) to move the cursor to the name of the list and hit the CLEAR key and enter. The data should be gone. Here is a sample

Hit STAT key:

Hit 1

Hit up arrow

Hit CLEAR

Hit ENTER

Hit QUIT (2nd MODE)

ENTERING DATA

To enter data (after you have cleared the list), Hit STAT, then 1 and start entering the data. For example suppose you wish to enter the following pieces of data into L1

15

22

33

67

43

12

29

65

81

25

Here is what you should do

Hit STAT

Hit 1

Enter the data hitting ENTER after you type in each data value. When you are finished it will look as follows:

Hit QUIT (2nd Mode) to return to the home screen

That's all there is to it. If you want to enter some data in L2 or another list just use the arrow keys to move over and enter the data after you have entered L1

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Once data is entered into a list you can get some descriptive statistics on the data by doing the following:

Hit STAT

Hit right arrow once

Hit 1

Hit ENTER

Use the down arrow key to display more information

Two things to notice. If the data you wish to do statistics on is not in L1, you can type the name of list after the 1-Var Stats appears on the home screen. For example if you wanted to calculate the statistics on L2, you would type: STAT right arrow 1 2nd 2 ENTER and you would have the data in L2

Notice variance is not given, this is because it is just the square of the standard devation. If you want variance a quick way to get it after you have calculated these statistics is as follows:

Hit VARS

Hit 5

Hit 3 then the square key (next to comma)

Hit ENTER

This is the value for sample variance for this dataset.

If you wish to give a list a name you can do this by entering the stats editor using up arrow to highlight L1, then hitting 2nd INS a new list will appear and you will notice the ALPHA LOCK will be on. You then can type in the name of the list and hit enter and type in the data as you did before. TRY this and ask questions if you have trouble.

Here is a practice problem

  1. Clear L1
  2. Type in the following data in L1: 13 16 29 37 45 67 89 92 104
  3. Calculate the descriptive statistics for this data

Are these your final screens?
